Bush Receives Purple Heart from Vietnam Vet

18 05 2007

The tragedy at VA Tech had at least one positive outcome. On the morning of April 16, 2007 George W. Bush was to receive a Purple Heart from Bill Thomas, a Vietnam Veteran. Unfortunately or fortunately depending how you look at it, the event was cancelled because of the VA Tech shooting.

Thomas and his wife came up with the brilliant idea over breakfast saying “we feel like emotional wounds and scars are as hard to carry as physical wounds.”

If we followed this rationale it would mean that Seung-Hui Cho, the alleged VA Tech shooter, should also receive a Purple Heart for his emotional scars or countless other individuals that commit crimes based on emotional trauma.

Mr. Bush might carry emotional scars due to the Iraq war but there is a major flaw with this line of thinking. Bush’s so called emotional wounds are from a war he started by fabricating intelligence. Giving him a medal of honor without fighting on the front lines and risking his life for others belittles the soldiers who have been killed or wounded in war.

If Mr. Bush had any respect for the soldiers who have or will receive Purple Heart medals, he would respectfully decline the honor and give it to the professors and students of VA Tech.
